Schitt’s Creek

Schitts-Creek

Johnny and Moira Rose are nouveau riche, their wealth largely from Johnny’s video store empire, the second-largest in North America. With that wealth, Moira was able to put her life as a daytime soap-opera actress behind her.

As they have always led a garish life of excessive wealth, their now-adult offspring, David and Alexis, have been spoiled, not knowing anything but having whatever they wanted to be handed to them on a silver platter their entire lives, and not having had to work a day in their lives.

Their collective lives change when out of circumstance they end up breaking except for the one asset Johnny bought for David years earlier as a joke: a small backwater town called Schitt’s Creek. The Roses are forced to move there, initially living in the Schitt’s Creek Motel.

The town’s founding family, the Schitts, still largely control the town in their seemingly unsophisticated ways. The Roses do whatever they can to find a way back to their previous life, but in the meantime have to try to eke out a living in their new home, which is totally outside their sensibilities.

Among those aiding Leslie on her quest — and often standing in her way — are her skeptical boss, Ron; her enterprising colleague, Tom; and a state auditor with whom she enters into an under-wrapped office romance. She also works closely with a local nurse who becomes the city health department’s new public relations director — and her best friend.

Kim’s Convenience

Kims-Convenience

The Kims are first-generation Korean-Canadians who operate a convenience store in inner-city Toronto. They like to believe that they are modern and have fully integrated into Canadian life, which isn’t totally how others probably view them, believing they have a more traditional Korean sensibility.

Among those that view them this way are most of their customers and their two Canadian-born offspring, young adults Jung and Janet. Jung actually left home at age sixteen in an argument with “Appa” and entered into a life of juvenile delinquency. Jung, who has not been home since is now trying to make a better life for himself.

What Appa does not know is that Jung actually lives and works in the neighborhood and that “Umma” and Janet have kept in touch with him over this entire time in the hope that he and Appa will sometimes reconcile. With Jung not at home, Janet has felt over-parented. While Appa and Umma pay for her art college schooling in her want to be a photographer, they really just want her to marry a nice, Christian, Korean boyfriend, and for her and her future husband to take over running the store.

Atypical

Atypical

“I’m a weirdo; that’s what everyone says,” says the very Atypical high school senior Sam when we meet him. Maybe so, but this weirdo has friends, a loving family, an all-consuming interest in penguins — and something relatively new, a desire to find a girl to date, even if his mom, Elsa, says he’s not ready.

7 Most Underrated Netflix Movies You Must Watch Now

As he sets about his quest for his typical absorption, diving into the research and taking advice from the people who care about him, Sam soon learns that connecting romantically isn’t as easy as fixing a computer. People don’t make a lot of sense to Sam, but slowly, surely, he’s learning to live in the big, bright, confusing world along with all the other imperfect people around him.

Derry Girls

Derry-Girls

Derry Girls takes place in Ireland in the early 1990s, a time of tense political and religious conflict — but with the quartet of teen girls at the heart of the show, military checkpoints are just another fact of life to roll their eyes at. They’re more concerned with issues like how to raise money for their class trip to France, given that none of them have trust funds like their schoolmates, or how to sneak out of detention in time to see a cute boy’s band perform.

Erin is the self-styled intellectual of the bunch, dropping references to Samuel Beckett that fly over everyone’s heads. Her drifty cousin Orla has her head in the clouds and thinks nothing of stealing Erin’s diary and doing dramatic readings from it.

Foulmouthed, Pernod-swilling Michelle has a bark worse than her bite and is totally boy-crazy. High-strung but sweet Clare is a well-meaning ball of nerves who doesn’t know when to quit when it comes to chugging energy drinks or crying. Michelle’s cousin James is the sidekick of their group — and an Englishman to boot, who finds him attending their all-girls Catholic school for fear of what might happen to him if he were lumped in with other boys.

American Vandal

American-Vandal

Clearly a riff on the streaming giant’s acclaimed true crime series Making A Murderer and The Keepers, American Vandal is a half-hour true-crime satire that explores the aftermath of a costly high school prank that left twenty-seven faculty cars vandalized with phallic images.

Over the course of the eight-episode season, an aspiring sophomore documentarian Peter Maldonado investigates the controversial and potentially unjust expulsion of Dylan Maxwell, the troubled senior accused of the phallic vandalization.
