Memento

Memento

Leonard Shelby has short-term memory loss resulting from an injury he sustained which was associated with the murder of his wife. He remembers his life prior to the incident, such as being an insurance claims investigator.

He has learned to cope with his memory loss through dealing with a man named Sammy Jankis, a person he investigated professionally who also had short-term memory issues.

Some of these coping mechanisms are to have a system of where to place things, talk to people face-to-face if possible rather than on the telephone as to be able to gauge their true intention, take Polaroids and write copious notes, the most important of which he tattoos on his body so that they become permanent.

Gladiator

Gladiator

In Gladiator, victorious general Maximus Decimus Meridias had been named keeper of Rome and its empire by dying emperor Marcus Aurelius, so that rule might pass from the Caesars back to the people and Senate.

Marcus’ neglected and power-hungry son, Commodus, has other ideas, however. Escaping an ordered execution, Maximus hurries back to his home in Spain, too late to save his wife and son from the same order.

Taken into slavery and trained as a gladiator by Proximo, Maximus lived only that he might someday take his revenge and fulfill the dying wish of his emperor. The time soon comes when Proximo’s troupe is called to Rome to participate in a marathon of gladiator games held at the behest of the new emperor, Commodus.

Once in Rome, Maximus wastes no time in making his presence known, and is soon involved in a plot to overthrow the emperor with his former-love Lucilla, Commodus’ sister, after whom he lusts, and also the widowed mother of Lucius, heir to the empire, after his uncle and democratic-minded senator, Gracchus.

Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks), a precise time-watcher who works for Federal Express, is called to duty on Christmas Eve and promises his girlfriend (Helen Hunt) that he’ll be home for New Year’s.

But his plane crashes in the Pacific, and everyone else is killed. Chuck washes up on a deserted island. Suddenly, all he has is time. He expects to be rescued and sorts the FedEx packages that wash up.

When he finally realizes no one’s coming, he gets to work, using items from the packages as survival tools. A volleyball, stained with his own blood, becomes a companion.

But he leaves one package unopened as a symbol of his identity — the man who gets the packages delivered. Four years later, the side of a cabin bathroom washes ashore, and Noland has what he needs to create a sail.

He knows the tides and the seasons well and plans an escape, knowing he’d rather die out on the ocean than stay on the island. What finally makes it possible for him to leave isn’t what he relied on in his old life but the hope he has learned on the island.
